The Domowina People's Press(Ludowe nakładnistwo Domowina)
The Domowina People's Press (Ludowe nakładnistwo Domowina), founded in 1958, continues a 450-year-old tradition of Sorbian literature and produces a wide range of high quality publications in three languages, including newspapers, journals, and books of all kinds, in addition to textbooks and teaching materials. It generates and produces publications related to the Sorbs, their identity, culture, and academic activity. These include works of fiction and children's books written by living Sorbian writers; among these are famous names like Jurij Brìzan and Kito Lorenc, as well as representatives of the middle and younger generations of authors. The classics of Sorbian literature are regularly kept in print, and works of world literature under licence are a staple item in the editorial programme. Special attention is directed to collaboration with publishing houses in Slavonic countries. Emphasis is laid on publishing the results of scholarly research, as in the series „Publications of the Sorbian Institute“ (Spisy Serbskeho instituta).
The Domowina People's Press has its own bookshop. This is the Smoler Bookshop in Budyčin (Bautzen), the only location in Germany where all the Press's Sorbian and German books are available, as well as a range of sound recordings. It also has an antiquarian and second-hand section. Authors' readings and book-launches are regularly held. The „Friends of the Smoler Bookshop“, founded in 2000, is a society supporting the Bookshop's aims.
